Open interest, volume and stock price chart
Chart call and put open interest, volume and premium for a whole option chain, one expiration or one contract against the stock price, capture by capture.
Overview
This chart puts a symbol's option open interest (contracts still open), volume (contracts traded) and premium next to the stock price, one point per stored capture. Use it to see whether options positioning in a symbol is building, unwinding or simply trading, and how that lines up with the price.
You can reach it in two places:
- Research → Charts → OI, Volume, Premium & Stock Price (
/charts/oi-vs-price): a filter row and Generate button, eight separate charts. - Research → Reports, report Open interest vs price (
/reports/oi-vs-price): the page titled Open Interest, Volume & Stock Price, which opens on the symbol with the highest total open interest and updates as you change the filters. See Open interest vs price report for the ranked list behind it.
The data delay depends on your plan and is shown on every view; both pages say the series are built from delayed data.
Before you start
- This is a Pro feature. On the report page, plans without advanced analytics see "This chart is available on the Pro plan." and an Upgrade to Pro link instead of the chart. The Charts sidebar entry is shown only on plans with advanced analytics.
- The default range is the last 30 days. Your plan's history allowance sets the earliest date; on the Free plan the latest point is the previous session's close.
Steps
From Charts
- Open Research → Charts and choose OI, Volume, Premium & Stock Price.
- Pick a symbol.
- Optionally choose Option Expiry (or leave All), Option Type (All, Call or Put) and Strike. Strike is available only after you choose one expiration.
- Adjust Start date and End date if needed, then press Generate.
- Drag the slider under any chart to zoom, and press Reset zoom to undo.
From Reports
- Open Research → Reports and choose Open interest vs price.
- The chart first shows the symbol with the highest total open interest. Type another symbol to change it.
- Choose Option Expiry Date, Option Type and Strike Price as needed; the chart reloads. Press Generate after editing dates.
- Use Zoom in, Zoom out and Reset zoom above the charts; the zoom applies to every chart on the page at once.
Columns and metrics
| Chart / series | What it means |
|---|---|
| Combined Open Interest & Volume (Charts page) | Total open interest and total volume of every selected contract, calls and puts together. |
| Call & Put Open Interest, Volume & Stock Price (report page) | Call OI, call volume, put OI and put volume on one chart, with the stock price on a second axis. |
| Stock Price | The underlying's price at each capture. |
| Call Open Interest / Put Open Interest | Open interest summed over the selected calls or puts. |
| Call Volume / Put Volume | Session volume summed over the selected calls or puts. |
| Call Premium / Put Premium (Charts page) | The average mark (mid of bid and ask) of the selected calls or puts, per share. |
| Call Premium Price / Put Premium Price (report page) | The premium of one strike; shown only when you choose a specific strike. |
What "selected contracts" means follows your filters: every expiration and strike (All), every strike of one expiration, or one strike. Choosing Call or Put hides the other side's charts. On the report page, the line above the charts shows the symbol, the date range and the number of captures, with "(truncated)" if the range held more points than one chart can show.
How to read it
- Volume resets every session. Volume is the cumulative session total at each capture, so it climbs during a day and starts again the next day. Open interest changes once per session as positions are settled.
- Rising open interest with high volume suggests new positions are being opened. High volume with flat open interest suggests trading that opened and closed within the day or offset existing positions.
- Calls against puts. Compare Call Open Interest with Put Open Interest to see which side holds more positions, and whether the balance is shifting.
- Premium with price. For one strike, a premium that rises while the stock is flat can point to rising implied volatility; check the Metric glossary for how premium, IV and moneyness relate.
- A side with no contracts at a capture is plotted as 0 for open interest and volume and as a gap for premium.
Example
Illustrative data only. For XYZ, expiration All, type All, over 20 sessions: total open interest rises from 100,000 to 150,000 contracts, almost all of it in calls, while daily call volume peaks at 20,000. Stock Price moves from 50 to 54 over the same sessions. Choosing the 55 call of the nearest expiration shows its premium rising from 1.00 to 2.00. The chart shows call positions accumulating while the stock rose; it does not show who holds them or why.
Using it in your research
- Is new money arriving or leaving? Check whether open interest keeps rising after a volume spike seen on the dashboard or a report.
- Which expiration is the activity in? Run the chart with All, then one expiration at a time, to see where the open interest sits.
- How has one contract priced? Choose one strike to see its premium next to the stock price before you study it in the Options screener.
- Is this pattern new for the symbol? Compare with Money flow history for the same dates.
Troubleshooting
I see "This chart is available on the Pro plan."
Your plan does not include advanced analytics. The report list still shows the ranked symbols; the chart itself needs Pro.
"Please select Symbol" or "Please select a Symbol."
Choose exactly one symbol before pressing Generate.
The Strike list is disabled
On the Charts page, choose an Option Expiry first; strikes are listed per expiration.
"No records found"
Nothing was captured for that symbol, filters and dates. Widen the range or set the filters back to All.
