Importing symbols into a watchlist

Overview

Import symbols… adds many symbols to a watchlist in one go. You always see a preview first: each line shows whether it will be added, is a duplicate, is not covered, is not a symbol, or is over your plan limit. Only the lines marked Will be added are saved.

Before you start

• A CSV file of up to 1 MB with a symbol or ticker column, or a plain list of symbols.
• The number of symbols per watchlist depends on your plan; see Plan and usage.

Steps

1. Open Research → Watchlists.
2. Open the row menu (⋮) of the watchlist and choose Import symbols….
3. Choose a CSV file, or paste symbols (one per line, or separated by commas or spaces). Download a template gives you a sample file.
4. If your file has several columns, check Symbol column (it is detected automatically).
5. Click Preview. Use Only problems to see the lines that will be skipped and why. Rows marked Not a symbol or Not covered may show Did you mean with a Use XYZ button (for example a company name such as "Sample Corp" resolves to its ticker). Nothing changes until you choose it; ambiguous names list the choices instead of picking one.
6. Click Add N symbols. Duplicates, symbols we do not cover and lines over your limit are skipped; nothing else changes.

Example

A file with the lines symbol, XYZ, xyz, NOPE1 previews as: XYZ Will be added, xyz Duplicate (listed twice in the file), NOPE1 Not covered. Clicking Add 1 symbol adds only XYZ.

FAQs

Is my file stored?

No. The file is read for the preview and again when you confirm, then discarded.

Can I import notes?

Yes: a note column next to the symbol column is imported with each symbol.

Can I import broker position files or Excel?

Not yet; CSV and pasted lists only for now.

Troubleshooting

"The file changed since the preview"

You edited the text after previewing. Click Back, then Preview again.

Everything is "Over plan limit"

The watchlist is already at your plan's limit. Remove symbols, split the import across lists, or upgrade.

My symbols show "Not a symbol"

Only tickers are accepted (letters, digits, ., -, ^; up to 12 characters). Company names are not matched yet.
